Prunella Scales, Tesco bargain hunter, champions small stores.
As the elderly bargain hunter Dotty Turnbull, she helped Tesco become Britain's biggest supermarket chain.
Prunella Scales is thought to have earned more than £1million from her role in Tesco's advertising campaign.
Now in what might be seen as a dramatic change of allegiance, she has taken up the cause of the small shopkeeper.
Miss Scales is backing a campaign to save the independent trader - and keep supermarkets and big name stores out of her local area.
She is fighting to save Northcote Road, a street in Battersea, South-West London, which is renowned for its small independent food shops and street market. Several businesses have already shut as rents soar and leases are not renewed.
Miss Scales, 74, who has lived nearby for 39 years with her actor husband Timothy West, recently handed over a petition of 7,000 names to Wandsworth Council, asking it to ensure the road maintains its individual charm and does not change plans for how the land is used.
Miss Scales, who appeared as Dotty for ten years, said: 'I am grateful to Tesco.'
'It's not against supermarkets, but I don't think they should take over, there should be room for individual traders and market traders. Norcote Road is a very special area'. (reprinted from the Daily Mail)
